Breslau Public School was selected to be the pilot school for the Stream of Dreams Watershed Education and Community Art program run by the Grand River Conservation Authority. During the week of June 8th each classroom attended a presentation at the school which introduced them to the local watersheds and the streams that flow or once flowed through them. It also taught them how to take care of the water and all the living things in it. Afterwards everyone had the opportunity to paint a wooden fish to help produce a Stream of Dreams fish mural on our school fence. This program will hopefully empower our children to help improve their community and its waterways by giving them the tools to adjust their own behavior toward water, by helping them teach others and by beautifying our school yard. If you haven’t already, please come by the school and see our beautifully decorated fence by the climber and Naturalization Area!
To make this all happen we relied totally on community support. We were fortunate to be able to collect enough material and financial donations that we did not have to charge any of the students for our involvement in this special project. We wish to thank:
- Rona In Guelph, especially Mr. Filsinger, who donated all of the wood for the fish
- Staff and residents of the Ontario Correctional Institute who cut most of the wood to make the fish (thanks to Mr. Blundon a parent volunteer who coordinated this contact for us!)
- Mrs. Bertelink’s father-in-law Dick and his friends who also helped cut out the fish
- Ms. Peats’ Gr. 7’s and 8’s as well as Mrs. Bell’s Gr. 4’s who prepainted most of the fish
- All of the volunteers who helped install the fish onto our fence
- Saftety-Kleen, Stantec and Conestoga Meat Packers for their financial donations
- Grand River Conservation Authority for delivering the program
Many thanks as well to Mrs. Rudd, one of our Grade 5 teachers, who orchestrated this entire project. We have been so fortunate to be the first school in Waterloo Region to experience this valuable environmental program!
