On April 6, Breslau Public School hosted a family Math Night to give parents an idea about how their children are learning mathematics in a fun and creative way. It was great to see so many parents interested in math for the 21st century. Approximately 150 people came out to join in the fun. There were multiple stations scattered around the gymnasium, which gave families an idea about how many methods there are to learn this very important subject (i.e. math games, problem solving, and integrating technology, to name just a few!). This was helpful for parents to learn how their children are graded. There are three factors to this process: observation of the student, conversations between the student and teacher, and the quality of the work the student hands in. This all triangulates into a final mark, which is then marked on the report card. Another important station was the student growth mindset. This is when the student starts to realize their potential, and also the benefits of trying again. There were two mindsets: fixed, and growth. A fixed mindset is when the student believes their abilities and intelligence are natural. A growth mindset is when the student understands that through effort, hard work , persistence, and determination, their skills can be developed into something great! The night closed with a bang as there were still raffle prizes to be won. As guests were leaving, there were smiles on people’s faces. It was considered by the school community to be a big success.
