You get caught in traffic, held up at work, or maybe you just forgot that it was your turn to pick up the kids from school. It really does not matter why you are not here, the important question is “Do your children know your safe meeting spot at school?”.
The next question that the staff at Breslau Public School wants you to think about is this. Is your safe meeting spot really a safe spot, or is it just a convenient place for you when you’re in a hurry?
It’s up to you to arrange for an effective and safe meeting spot for your child. Please also make sure that your child knows what to do if you are late. We would like to suggest that there is only one safe meeting spot and that is by the front door of the school. For our kindergarten students, it is staying with the kindergarten teacher on duty. There will always be someone who comes by the front door and it’s open for students to come inside for extra safety. This is very important if they do not know where mom or dad is or why no one has come to pick them up. Please, rehearse this with your children and ensure that they know this safety spot.
Let your children know that if you have missed picking them up that they may not: a) go home with their best friend. b) walk home by themselves. c) play at the park.
Make sure that your children know that the Front Door of the school is their safety spot. There is nothing worse that activating our staff to search for a missing youngster. Fortunately, when this has occurred the little ones have been found and they have usually done the above. If you see a little one walking by themselves near our school at entry or dismissal time, please either bring them to the school, call the school about them, or call the police. If a friend of your children shows up to play right after school, please contact their parents to ensure they know the whereabouts of their child. If you cannot reach the parent, please call the school as soon as possible. Our office closes at 3:30 p.m. thus the earlier you call us the easier it is for us to respond in a timely fashion. We are all responsible for the safety of the children in our community. Thank you.
